WELCOME TO LEAVING LAS VEGAS! Updated 08-14-08
Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. Sin City. No matter what you call it, this city's synonymous with the ultimate in nightlife, gambling in the billions, amazing shows and productions, and extreme architecture and buildings. But before all the Cirque shows, before the ultra clubs and lounges, before the towering condos and high rises, before the congested traffic and massive high definition and LCD signs and screens, Las Vegas was a city of dreams and innovation, simple neon and classic glitz, mobsters and legends.
Reminders of this amazing and infamous past still dot the Las Vegas valley, some having thankfully been restored and reused, while others lay decaying and forgotten, soon to be only a memory in the minds of those who even care to remember. Help to preserve the memories and promote the preservation of these historic hotels, casinos, and architectural works of art; those sites and buildings that have contributed to the growth of this great city and given it such a wonderfully rich history.

We present our readers with a mystery: The Mystery Mural . Check it out.
As well, we're very irritated and disappointed to learn that Nevada Landing came down for nothing. All MGM/Mirage plans to build their master planned community out in Jean have been scrapped. The uncertain economy and indicators in Las Vegas, such as one unfinished resort's foreclosure days ago and another's postponement, have assured that the site where Nevada Landing sat will remain a vacant desert likely for years. What a shame and a waste of time, money, and sense. The sign still stands. R.I.P Nevada Landing.
In better news , there's news on the Huntridge Theater front. The owner, Eli Mizrachi, is unveiling plans and drawings for an adaptive reuse of the property. The Save The Huntridge Commitee have seen these plans already and they sound absolutely amazing! LeavingLV.net friend Pam Hartley has put together a wonderful event for Eli to present his plans to the surrounding historic neighborhoods. The public and press are welcome! The event information follows:
Wednesday, August 13th, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
1100 E. Sahara Avenue

Echelon, Boyd's replacement for the Stardust, has been put on hold. This comes as no surprise to us or our readers. How many of these places can you propose and build before no one's interested in buying or backing? This is bad news for the city, but good news for what's left of our history, as perhaps they'll rethink the value, restoration, and reuse of what's here, rather than demolishing it to build another project that will most likely be canceled. Talks to bring the Frontier sign down have slowed as well, as it's certain Elad is rethinking their investment on the Strip.
Please join us Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the Springs Reserve for the next installation of Classic Las Vegas' Untold Stories: In the Shadow of the Bomb. We will look back at the years of nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site with nuclear scientists and workers as well as those who watched the early morning blasts from Las Vegas. Admission is $12.
Please read and sign our guestbook!

We've received lots of emails over the last couple months asking about the statue of Benny Binion and lots of you think this should be covered. We agree. So here's a short page on The Benny Binion Statue, which in our opinion, should never have left downtown, especially to be displayed the way it is. What a shame.
Also, join us in the Arts District this Thursday to celebrate our very good friend Brian Paco Alvarez's exhibit which has recreated the amazing storm drains under Las Vegas and is based on the book by Matthew O'Brien and Danny Mollohan's book Beneath the Neon: Life and Death in the Tunnels of Las Vegas. Matt will be speaking and signing copies of his book, and some of the drain dwellers will be on hand for an open panel discussion. This should be a great event!

Thursday, July 17th
6:00 p.m.
The Arts Factory

In loving memory.

Our site is dedicated to preserving and documenting the memories as well as supporting the preservation of Las Vegas' past. We in no way condemn progress and change, and support our growing and ever-evolving valley, and those who work to keep this a spectacular city to live in.
